DIY Painting Project: A Colorful Front Door

Temperatures are dropping and days are growing shorter, but it doesn’t mean your outdoor projects must come to a halt — nonetheless. From plantings to rapid and easy home upgrades, fall is the perfect time to tackle those final exterior projects ahead of the last leaves drop and the doldrums of winter set in.

Among the most impactful and budget-friendly changes you may make to your home is to make an inviting entrance with a couple of coats of paint. Take inspiration from this colorful time and give your home a fresh new look by painting your doorway.

Our basic white doorway lacked personality and was among the last items on our summer to-do record we had to tackle. With many sunny days at the prediction and a couple of coats of paint, I gave our entrance porch some essential curb appeal.

Before you begin painting, provide your doorway a good cleaning — whether that is a stress wash or just a good old-fashioned scrub-down. Sand or sand off any chipping paint and fill any dents or dings with putty, then sand the surface to a smooth end.

Open the door and put a drop cloth underneath. Use a high-quality brush; my go-to is your 2-inch angled Purdy Cub brush. Though I favor the end of a brush, then you can also utilize a smooth-finish roller.

In addition, it is worth investing in a good-quality exterior paint. I used Behr’s Marquee Exterior Paint at a semigloss finish. The colour is comparable to Behr’s California Poppy; it gives a fun twist on our Clark + Kensington Seal Point gray exterior.

If your door has a window pane, employ painter’s tape around the borders of the mullions. Eliminate or tape the doorway hardware for easy painting.

I always start with the door panels — painting the moldings first and the centre — and then work my way around the doorway.

Hint: Don’t oversaturate your brush. Multiple thin, even coats are the key to a perfect finish.

Leave your door open while the paint dries. Get started early in the day so your door can fully dry before you have to lock up at nighttime. Apply additional coats the following day(s) to present your doorway a lasting finish.

Notice any paint? Don’t touch errors before the paint has dried. Subsequently sand drips smooth using a fine-grit sandpaper. Give the doorway another coat of paint . Let it dry and heal before accessorizing your doorway.
