The Way to Examine Lawns for Fungal Growth

Fungus is a natural companion from the San Francisco area for lawns, including perennial ryegrass, Bermuda grass and fescue. Many types of fungus improve a lawn and assist in the breakdown of soil nutrients. Not all fungal growths are beneficial and will be the source of many types of plant diseases. The grass blades are infected by the fungi, stems and stalks. Dollar spot, fairy ring, pink snow mold, red thread and rust are some of the fungal growths that cause difficulties in lawns. Monitoring abilities are taken by testing for fungal growth and contributes to a broader understanding of lawn care.

Walk through the lawn looking with growing patches of grass. Check for brown areas of the lawn. This is a sure sign that something’s wrong with the turf.

Examine the lawn, looking for rings, circular patches and stains. Start looking for spores, mushrooms and mycelium growth (white threads), which are called signs since they are visible to the naked eye. Areas infected with fungal growth eliminate colour and depth quickly.

Dig up a part of dirt and bud using a hand trowel. Place the specimen and transfer it to a desk under good lighting. Separate a blade of grass and inspect the foliage for discolored or yellow blotches. Start looking along the surface of the soil just for growth that is slimy or white. Check the roots for stains that are black or dead. All of these are signs of fungal growth in the lawn.

In case the fungal disease can not be identified by you Just take another turf sample. Fungi are visible to some microscope and additional testing will have to be performed. Cut a divot out using a bulb of the edge of the area that is contaminated. Cut off the surplus dirt using a knife, leaving 3 inches of dirt attached to the sample. Where the lawn looks infected Have a sample.

Put the samples into a plastic bag with a tag. Put a moist paper towel from the bag. Write out about the sample including location, what kind of lawn, cultural practices, the date that the sample was gathered and your contact info. Put the samples and take them service office.
